One of my favorite books, Wonder by R.J. Palacio is also one I listened to with my whole family. I’ve also listened to The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall, which is a really sweet story that is definitely family-friendly. Both have really wonderful messages about tolerance and kindness, the importance of family love, friendship, and respect. They’re great summer reads, or “listens” if you chose the audiobook versions. The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is also great in audiobook form, narrated very well by Adam Grupper. All these are interesting true-to-life fi

Listening to audiobooks is a great way to spend quality time with family. Audiobooks aren’t only for special occasions like vacations and holidays – although they’re fun to listen to together on a road trip – they’re great for time on the weekends or even a set time every day! Setting aside some time to be with family, while playing board games or just sitting around with friends and family while listening to a story is a nice change from watching TV or playing video games. It really is a wonderful thing to do with the entire family, especially those reluctant r
I was saddened to hear of author Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s death this month. She was a humorous author of adult and children’s books. Working in the children’s department, I was aware and appreciative of humorous books like Little Pea and Little Hoot and inspirational books like The Wonder Book and even Uni the Unicorn which has a sweet message about the importance of imagination and staying childlike as long as possible. Her kids books are clever, unique, and often funny. In 2010, her book Duck! Rabbit! was read at the White House for their Easter Celebration. Her adult bo

There is a new version of Pete’s Dragon that just came out on DVD and Blu-Ray (the original came out in 1977). It’s a heartwarming story and the dragon, Elliot, is very sweet when interacting with the main character, Pete. The very beginning of the movie is sad in that Pete loses both his parents in an accident when he is with them on a car trip. But as with most Disney movies, all turns out well in the end. The young actor who plays Pete, Oakes Fegley, is a truly amazing talent, and the movie also stars Bryce Dallas Howard (of Jurassic World) and Robert Redford. Our library also h
